"This is the beginning of a new day. You have been given this day to use as you will. You can waste it or use it for good. What you do today is important because you are exchanging a day of your life for it. When tomorrow comes, this day will be gone forever; in its place is something that you have left behind . . . let it be something good." (unknown)

    about time for an update...modernism

Well, it's been a long time since i last updated...and so much as happened in the time that has passed. One being that another semester has started. I'm taking 5 classes this semester...a lesser load than before (but yet people still taunt me about being an over-achiever...even though the "supposed average" workload is 5 classes). In one of my classes, Survey of American Literature (Realism to Post-Modernism), we started the discussion the various literary periods following Romanticism, and it reminded me of a paper I had done for my art class about a year and a half ago...and since i haven't updated in such a long time, I decided to share that paper I did a long time ago.

    and here it is:

    Modernism

Modernism is the time period when art broke from the traditional ideals and rules that had been practiced. The idea that art could be influenced by the artist’s emotions and imagination came into play. This was when artist moved away from the idea that art revolved around recapturing reality and following the norm of society. But as time progressed the definition of what was “modern” changed as well. There is one main factor of which is usually used to classify what is modern and what is not, that factor being the idea that the artwork is impacted more by the artist’s perspective than anything else. But when did modernism begin?

At first, I thought that the period of modernism began during the Impressionism era which was lead by Édouard Manet. His works like “A Bar at the Folies-Bergere” (A History of Western Art; 3rd Edition, pg. 422), shows the slight movement away from reality by use of blurred edges and the use of light. The use of color, light, and form is used by all impressionists to produce the idea of movement. Also Manet through his works like “Le Dejeuner sur l’Herbe” (A History of Western Art; 3rd Edition, pg. 414) is able to shock the viewers because of it’s content which was not of the usual, an idea the modern art seems to have. But did modernism start because of impressionism? How did impressionism start?

Another possible push that may have started the modernism period are the introduction of Japanese Woodblock Prints and the invention of the camera. Around 1853 to 1854, an expedition that opened up trade with Japan had introduced the western world to Japanese prints, an example being “Keisei Eisen, Orian on Parade” (A History of Western Art; 3rd Edition, pg. 428). These prints made use of color, and in “Keisei Eisen” the color was used in chromatic unity, also the prints used landscapes, and entertainment as it’s subject matter. These characteristics later on found in the realm of Impressionistic artwork. In 1839, Louis Daguerre invented the first camera, which put an end for the need of most artists. Before the invention of cameras art was more of a way to capture time more than anything else. Many times, an artist was equivalent to that of a camera, their job being to paint portraits. So the invention of the camera allowed artists to explore the art found outside of portraits and the recapturing of reality. But did these factors start modernism, or is there something even before that?

By saying that modern art or the whole period of Modernism is described by the perception and the idea of there is something more than the usual or the everyday can mean that the idea of modernism may have existed before the art. Modern art, I believe started along the lines of the time of Impressionism with the introduction of both the camera and Japanese prints but the idea, itself may have been present long before the art we categorized as modern art. I think that the idea of modernism may have existed during the time of the Renaissance, when people began to think and learn more and events like the Reformation occurred. But if that’s the case then there is the possibility that the idea of modernism may have existed since the beginning of mankind because as we evolve and as time change we all adapt and develop new things that at the time we believed to have been “modern”. So when did modernism begin? I do not know. When did modern art begin? I seriously do not know because what one time period considers “modern” may not be the same for the next.

***yeah that's it...i actually think this was my draft....since I just found numerous grammer problems...

ANYWAYS, yeah that's it...for now...i'll update later and more often...Bye now!

    a little bit of writing

As I sit here, I watch the people around me hustle and bustle.
The woman behind the counter fixing the decorations on display.
A couple of old men telling stories and letting out hearty laughs.
    I stare outside the window,
And the rain did not look like it'll end anytime soon.
I go back to my current past-time of people-watching.
The door swung open and a swarm of people walked in.
They moved towards a table across from the one I sat,
All of them talking and laughing.
But my attention was grabbed by a man and a woman.
In the midst of the crowd, they seemed to have singled one another out.
    I watched them for awhile,
Watching the way he looked at her,
With a glimmer in his eye.
She smiles at him and welcomingly accepts his glances.
He pulled her chair for her to sit and sat in the empty chair right next to her,
While talking she placed her hand on his arm as she laughed. They didn't seem to let anything interrupt their conversation.
Both are perfectly fine talking to each other,
    Just being with each other.
    I sighed,
And shifted my gaze towards you and thought,
"What happened to the glimmer in your eyes?"
"Why is it that my smiles are no longer constant?"
"Why is it that I sit here yearning for you to talk to me,
while you're snug just sipping your coffee and reading your book?"
You look over your book and find me glaring at you.
You smiled, placed the book down, leaned over and kissed me.
And with that all my inquiries and doubt were wiped away.
"Never mind," I thought to myself as a silent smile crept on my face.
You went back to your book but placed your hand on top of mine.
I returned to my people watching,
And I found the same man and woman looking our way.

depends on the day...but this morning was
    "It's sunday ALREADY!"

    2. what would your perfect day be like?
i doubt I'll answer this the way that people
expect it to be answered, because I think
every day has been perfect...as it is. But a
good day for me would be one with great
weather (sunny but very windy), a day
when I see all my friends, a day when I do
everything I had planned to do that day
(with little to no hassle) and without any
arguments with anyone i my family.

    3. when you look at yourself in the mirror,
    what do you see?
Me...the compromise of what I both hate and love.

    4. if a genie gave you a wish, what would it
be? on a superficial basis, I'd say money (we all
    would).

    5. what is the best thing about being famous?
I'll tell you when I am...J/J...my guess is, the
money but I'd rather not be famous because
the money's not worth the loss of privacy and
so many other things that come with the territory.

    6. what songs do you sing in the shower?
depends on my mood...and how early in the day
    i'm taking the shower

    7. Define boredom.
the act of doing nothing without the possibility
    of doing anything later on

    8. What can you never say 'no' to?
several things...but as of late it's only been people
    who guilt trip me...EVIL!

    9. define your ideal man / women:
a friend, funny, great conversationalist and listener,
    sweet, understanding, responsible, smart,
    family-oriented, and hard working

    10. what do you wish you had more of?
money (refer u to the genie question)...and courage

    11. Name 2 things a girl / guy should never
    be without?
    cell phone and cash

    12. describe yourself relaxing..
reading a book, listening to music, or my favorite,
    sleeping

    14. what turns you off in a guy / girl ?
    cockiness, and sleeziness

    15. If you could have a superpower, what
    would it be?
    to see the future

    16. what wouldn't you be caught dead in?
    hmm....i don't know

    17. what's your current obsession?
ask reshma...LOL...J/J! nothing as of late.

    18. your most overused phrase.
    "OMG!"

    19. List the contents of your handbag.
cell phone, wallet (with little cash), lip balm, comb,
hand sanitizer, pen, paper, and  eyeglass case...
    hehe...it's a big hangbag.

    20. what do you need more of?
    i want a lot of things...BUT i don't think I really
    NEED anything at the moment

    21. what puts a smile on your face?
family and friends (all 'em dorks)

    22. If you could host a private party at your
house, what wud the theme would be.
    idk...hehe..TOGA!!!!! hehe....seriously though
    IDK, maybe a "just-show-up-ready-to-party"
    party.

    23. What do you wish you were doing this
    very moment?
    shopping, or with my friends
    24. 1 good trait.
    i'm friendly...

    Soroptomist (sp?) club, Amnesty Club
    and StuCo (senior year)

    28. what is the most boring topic to talk
    about?
???? I'll tell you after I have it

    29. what do you dislike about certain
    people?
how close-minded some are, and how some
don't think before they talk and how some
don't come out and say how they feel instead
of keeping it secret which makes the other
people clueless and quite possibilty irritated
    and annoyed.

    30. tell us something about urself to end this.
when I don't like something about someone or
something I will say it, but I won't be overtly
dramatic or mean about it. i believe that
everything happens for a reason, and that
looking back and thinking of ways that could
have been better is a great way to reminisce
but to wish that things are different is a different
    story.

    Question me

    Question Me

Question my intentions, then you'll learn what drives me.
Question my emotions, then you'll learn how I'll react to you and to everything else in the world.
Question my actions, then you'll learn about what it takes for me to act out my feelings and ideas.
Question my taste in friends, then you'll learn about the different pieces that makes me...me.
Question me regarding my family, then you'll learn about my culture, lifestyle and ideals.
Question my past, then you'll learn about how I want my future to be.
Question my goals, then you'll learn about my dreams and what I believe might bring me happiness.
Question me about books, music, movies, and sports, then you'll learn what interests me.
Question my intelligence and I'll question you regarding yours.
Question me if I'm interested and I'll question you back if you think you've questioned me enough.
To question me is to challenge me, to provoke me, and to intrigue me.
No matter my reaction, be that of laughter, tears, approval, or irritation, to question me is to grab my attention and maybe, I might start to question as well.
Question me to learn me, then you'll understand if you want me.
    So question me.

SONG STUCK IN MY HEAD: Proud Mary
    CHATTIN WITH: Nick and John

As of late, I feel like i'm back in middle school, *sigh* hate not knowing things. There's a storm abrewing, so it's been super rainy these days. My grades are pretty good this semester, well all except GEOGRAPHY!!!!! I hate the DAMN class!!! Anyways, next topic at hand, Myracle not being at Myracle night. Well, I am so sorry Anna, and everybody else who expected me to be there. But the whole Myracle night thing was a mystery for me, up until the day before and for my parents the day before is too late of a notice to allow me to go out. It seemed that even though the night was for me, I had no idea that it was happening until John told me about it. SO SORRY! But rest assure Myracle night will occur just not anytime soon. I feel so tired and sick right now. By the way, i'm also keeping a xanga, so if u guys want to check that out, click on the link on the side (with the other links) that says "My Xanga Account." That one has a bit more entries, but I will still try to update my blogdrive more often. BYE Y'all and ISLANDVIEW!!!
